Clear aligners must be worn 20 to 22 hours per day to achieve the planned tooth movements on schedule. Wearing aligners for fewer hours than recommended will slow treatment progress and may result in teeth not tracking correctly — requiring additional trays or extended treatment time. The two to four hours of daily removal are intended for eating, drinking non-water beverages, and oral hygiene — not extended periods of discretionary removal.

Most patients experience mild pressure or discomfort for the first day or two after switching to a new set of aligners — as the teeth begin to respond to the new tray's forces.
